Zanzibar: Day 2

I am currently sitting in humid 88 degree weather with T, Brian, and Natty Ice. We just finished lunch at the restaurant at the Kendwa Rocks resort next door to ours and are back at our bungalow. We all had chipattas (local fast food, 2 fish, 2 beef) and two rounds of drinks – big Kilimanjaro beers and some local dafas. I liked this establishment better than Sunset Bungalows because they offer big, outdoor cushioned couches to sit on at your table and the food seemed to be a bit better. We were also graced by the musical presence of Bob Marley.

After lunch, we found it appropriate timing to jump our bodies into the water. Let me fill you in quickly about this water. This water is perfect. The beach is white. I cannot stress this any more. In the water, I gave T a quick lesson on the proper mechanics of rock skipping and how proper wrist movement can do wonders for throwing distance. In return she showed me how she punched girls in the face and broke four noses during her water polo days in high school. She also showed me how to “egg beater” the water, a technique I am still working on and hoping to nail down by the time I leave.

Once the fun was over in the crystal clear agua, we retreated to our bungalow for a few rounds of fruity cocktails. I came and went to take pictures in and out of the water of beach people and dhow boats. Before we knew it, we were watching the sun go down. By the time we were wishing we had our 75 lumens of headlamp action, we decided it would be a good time to shower up and skower down the beach and find a different restaurant for dinner.

We met Brian and Natalia for dinner at the bar on the beach around 8 and headed south down the beach. After checking several of the huge Italian monstrosities out, one which looked like a restaurant designed by West Elm, we settled on this old pirate looking place with no windows and a bunch of awesome flags. I had a chicken stir fry dish, T had a Marg pizza. I forget what the others had. Just remember I got a Pimms cup and everyone else wine.

Dinner was fun. Food was nothing to write home about, but the conversation was good and that’s usually what it’s all about. It also doesn’t hurt that we were able to walk home on the beach. The last activity of the night involved watching some of the employees burn boxes on the bonfire in front of the sunset bungalow restaurant on the beach. Then it was bed time.
