It's hard to go a February in California without reading or hearing about the "Firefall" event that occurs in Yosemite National Park. If everything goes right, and there are a lot of variables, Horsetail Falls will look as if it's lava for about ten to twenty minutes before the sun goes away for the day. As the earth rotates back in favor of longer days on the northern hemisphere, the set position for the sun slowly inches further north. As this happens, for a couple weeks in February, the sun sets in just a way that it hits exactly where Horsetail Falls, for lack of better words, falls.
For everything to go right, the weather needs to be agreeable (no clouds in front of the sun), there has to be snow to melt to create the falls and it has to be warm enough for the snow to be melting. Because of all these things, it's not always a guarantee to see it, which is why it's so special.
This was my first time seeing it and I 100% plan on trying to see it again.
